| Definition |
The Brock University Students’ Union Student Award for Teaching Excellence is presented to a staff member whose ability to communicate and connect with his or her students reaches above and beyond the requirements set forth in their job description. This award recognizes those teachers who consistently set out to provide an enriching environment in which to learn; by motivating, inspiring and cultivating creative thinking inside and outside of the classroom. |
| Nominations |
Nomination packages can be brought to the BUSU Office by the first Friday in March. |
| Eligibility |
The nominator must:
* be a registered undergraduate student at Brock University;
The nominee must:
* teach/lecture an undergraduate course at Brock University during the academic year the award is given;
* demonstrate consistent efforts to enrich the lives and Brock University experience of the undergraduate students they teach.
|
| Evidence |
Nominators will be required to complete “Intent to Nominate” form outlining the basic details of the nominee to the selection committee. The nominators also will be required to write a one page “Letter of Support” outlining how the nominee has helped enrich their learning experience at Brock University. Nominators are encouraged to gather signatures of support from fellow undergraduate students, though this is not formally required. |
| Criteria |
Teaching excellence can be developed in many different ways, and every student will interact with their instructor in an individual manner. Nominators should be clear as to what makes their nominee unlike other teachers at Brock, and how the nominee has personally helped enrich their lives. There are no fixed criteria that will be judged in the final decision of this award, however there are a few characteristics that nominators may want to touch on in the “Letter of Support” such as:
* success at challenging students
* ability to motivate
* ability to inspire
* develop creative thinking
* ability to teach to an audience of diverse learning styles
* availability for consultation and support
It should be remembered that these are strictly guides to help a nominator in their creation of the one-page “Letter of Support” and not hard-set criteria. |
| Selection Process |
The selection process will be administered by the Academic Affairs Committee of the Brock University Students’ Union. This committee consists of the Vice President University Affairs, three (3) BUSAC Councilors, one (1) undergraduate senator and two (2) students-at-large.
This committee will make their decisions based on the information provided in the “Intent to Nominate” and the “Letter of Support” so that there is a winner selected from each of the six undergraduate faculties: Applied Health Science, Business, Education, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, and Social Science. Once the top nominee has been selected from each Faculty, it is then the responsibility of the Academic Affairs committee to determine the overall winner for the year’s prize.
|
| Award |
he overall award winner will be recognized at the BUSU awards ceremony, ‘The Buzies’, as well as receiving recognition at the ‘Partners in Higher Education Dinner’ hosted by the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance. The name will also be placed on a plaque for permanent display in the BUSU Awards Cabinet.
Each of the six faculty award winners will also receive a small gift.
One of the students who has nominated each faculty winner will be contacted to receive a gift certificate for shared lunch with the winner they have nominated.
|
| Repeat Winners |
No faculty winner shall be eligible to win their faculty award in two consecutive years.
An overall award winner is only eligible to win the overall award once every four years.
