Strategic Plan

Established in the late 1960s and incorporated in 1970, Brock University Students' Union set out to deliver services for its members and to advocate on behalf of the undergraduate students of Brock University.

Finding their feet, BUSU and University have experienced consistent and sustainable growth on all fronts throughout their relatively young lives. Rapidly increasing student enrolment, an ongoing expansion of business operations, the addition of many new services and a swelling external responsibility have all driven BUSU to closely examine its own identity, purpose and beliefs. Put another way, BUSU has grown to a level where it can nurture a distinct culture, therefore needs a framework to maintain and allow this culture to grow.

The people of the BUSU have always represented its most critical asset. Hard work, dedication, and the general will to encourage the BUSU towards its goals have been the driving forces behind its successes. At the same time, here lies its biggest challenge. An annual changeover of the Executive, Directors of the Board, Members of the Brock University Students' Administrative Council, and many staff members has taken its toll on progress.

Often ill-equipped with a clear goal and vision for the organization, the BUSU's decision makers have been naturally prone to invent, de-invent, and re-invent the wheel all over again. While BUSU's paddlers and navigators have acted from the general will to do good, there is a fundamental distinction between taking the BUSU to a new level and taking the BUSU to the next level.

Therefore, this strategic plan was undertaken as a paramount project with the central ambition of crafting a more articulate and calculated direction for the BUSU. By prescribing the guiding undertones for the organization, decision makers can build on each others' momentum and learn from paths explored less successfully.

The life of this document has been described as a five year span, which can be characterized as a BUSU generation. It is intended to live by being periodically reviewed and monitored. This document is not an end in and of itself. Rather, the process through which it came to fruition was equally vital. Forcing a thorough evaluation of the entire organization and its surroundings is a worthwhile endeavour that is indeed the perpetual responsibility of those who take leadership roles within the Brock University Students' Union now and in the future.
